GET YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS WITH GOOGLE LOCAL LISTING

If you’re having a local business that depends on customers in a local or regional market, then know that traditional SEO & Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns will help your business to only a certain extent which is quite good.

But to be still better, it’s advisable that your local business is listed on Google Local Listing, else your local business risks missing out on sales while your competition will gain, be doing well and rake in on all the benefits.

WHAT MAKES GOOGLE LOCAL LISTING SO CRITICAL?

A couple of reasons make it so and they are:

• Helps boost your local chains over corporate ones (Like for instance, a local pizzeria versus Pizza Hut).
• Helps foster community within local regions.
• Gives local consumers a better understanding of their community through the Internet.

Now what exactly is Google Local Listing?

Google Local Listing or Google Local as it’s popularly called is described as a listing aimed at local businesses, providing their owners benefits like recommendations, publishing of their own photos and reviews, facility to view a business’ Google Plus page with posts and other useful information.

WHERE WILL YOUR LISTING BE?

1. SERP – Google Local listings will show up in the Search Engine results page (SERP). Its good especially for very local businesses, like say a Restaurant called “Restaurants Hyderabadi Biryani Cafe”:

2. GOOGLE MAPS: Google Local listings also appear on those searching for relevant terms on Google Maps. Google Maps does a good job providing all the relevant information.  Clicking the Reviews Link will take you direct to the Google Local Page.

3.Local SERP – Local Listings also appear in local searches through users’ Google Plus page.

SETTING UP LOCAL LISTING ON GOOGLE

If you’re looking to list your local business on Google Local Listing, you’ll first need to create a ‘Google My Business’ account.

CREATE A NEW GOOGLE A/C

Set up a new Google Account to help you manage your business local listing. Though it’s possible to use your business or personal Google account for local listings, creating a different Google Account will make things much easier during later usage of the listing.

NOTE: Just clear your Website history and Cache before setting up the new Google account. This way you will be able to keep your personal browsing history from interfering with the work you’re about to do.

PICK ONE CATEGORY

You need to select a category from a list of Google-suggested options. Therefore select one that is favorable to your business.

NOTE:  Don’t worry too much about the category FOR later if you have verified your business listing, you can add unlimited additional categories.

GO TO GOOGLE ‘MY BUSINESS’

  • Click “Get on Google”
  • Go to the Google ‘My Business Page’, the same can be found at google.com/business.
  • Log in using your new Account’s Username and Password.

Once done, you next need to follow the following guidelines:

  • Type ‘Google Local Listings’ in the Search Bar and later click ‘Google My Business’. Once you appear on ‘Google My Business’, a window will appear. In case, you already have an account, click ’Sign-In’ ELSE just click “Get on Google”.

  • Go to “Get on Google” and type your Business Name and address in the tab given.
  • If it’s there, a list of suggested Business listing matches will appear. In such a case, just click on your business listing.
  • If not there, then go to ‘Select / Add Your Business’.  Just provide the necessary information.

The following information should be provided:

BUSINESS COMPANY INFORMATION

A screen will appear wherein you can either enter or update your business information. In case, your business is already listed, then make any changes you would want to your business information and that will set right the errors. On the other hand, if you aren’t listed, you’ll have to fill in all the blank fields.

NOTE: Every detail matters a lot, not even a single word should be wrong. So ensure that you enter 100% correct details.

 BUSINESS PHONE NUMBER

The Phone Number you provide will be the number Google will list for your business moving forward. Ensure that you type in the right number and also use the best number for customers to reach you faster and easier.

BUSINESS TYPE

Choose ‘Storefront’ for your business type to indicate your business with a physical location. ‘Storefront’ means any business with a physical address, including CPA firms, lawyers, doctors, etc and not just stores with a literal storefront.

BUSINESS CATEGORY

The above image showcases at the bottom of the form’ CATEGORY’. Choose a Category that describes your business.

Know that the category selection is very important as it is essentially the way Google will classify your business, and the type of search query it will display your listing for.

NOTE: Google offers preset Categories, or keywords, for each industry. Start typing your keyword in to see if Google produces a match. If it does, then select the best one. Good news is that you will get a chance to add more categories later on when you want to (up to 5).

 VERIFY YOUR BUSINESS

Google specializes in finding information from around the Internet. This means that you stand a good chance that it already may have had your business address listed. If that is true on your finding out, then click on your business to claim the listing.

Now suppose if there is no such business listing, then Click “None of these match – Add your business.”

NOTE: When entering your business information, make sure that you’re using your DBA name and not your company’s formal tax return name. This way you can have your customers recognize the name better and faster.

Google will want to verify that your business is located where you say that it is. This usually means waiting 1-2 weeks for a postcard with verification PIN.

NOTE: On certain occasions, you’ll be given the option to receive your PIN by text message OR automated phone call. If that happens, just take it for its much faster and easier!

EDITING YOUR BUSINESS PROFILE

  • Click ‘Continue & Verify’.
  • Once your profile appears, then edit your profile and add some more details about your business including the hours of operations, your URL, photos, videos etc.

NOTE:

  • If you notice on the text in the red box that ‘YOUR EDITS will not be validated until you verify your Business’, Then you need to immediately verify the same and confirm if it’s ok or not.
  • After you have clicked on “VERIFY NOW”, do not change your Business Name or Address, because the postcard including the verification code will be only sent to the previous address.
  • Click ‘EDIT’ box, situated at the top right hand corner.
  • Once the page appears, start making your edits as per your business. Remember whatever Address, Phone number and Business name that you are using here, you must use the same in your directory listings as well. Also, you can add the URL to your Website, Hours of operations for each day of your working days, Categories and a little Introduction describing your business.

  • Click ‘PHOTO’ Tab. Here in you will have the option of changing your logo, profile picture and cover picture.

CONFIRM YOUR BUSINESS: SET UP A GOOGLE+ PAGE

Setting up your ‘Google My Business Page’ is the first step in Local Search Optimization, and should be a high priority for all businesses hoping to be found online.

  • CONFIRM YOUR SUBMISSION: Google will offer you a chance to look over your information before submitting it. If you’re happy with the same, just click ‘CONFIRM’ tab to confirm your submission.
  • WAIT FOR THE POSTCARD: Once your submission is confirmed, enter the special code that Google will have sent to you via a Postcard in the mail. If you have not entered the same, your listing will not become “live”.
  •  ACTIVATE YOUR LISTING: On receiving the card, log into your ‘Google My Business Account’ and enter the code.

WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU’VE BEEN FORMALLY LISTED?

Congratulations!

Once you’ve confirmed your ‘Google My Business Account’, a host of opportunities will become available to you. With it, you’ll:

  • Be able to list as many business categories as you can find from Google’s suggested list.
  • Be able to write a company description to go with your local listing.
  • Have a better shot at reaching the 3-pack in Google search results.

NOTE: Once you have a Google My Business listing set up, THEN the next time you lists your BUSINESS on the web, make sure to use the exact same format that you have listed in Google.

For example: For Google, ‘145 Eighth St.’ is different from ‘145 8th Street’. So avoid making such mistakes when you type in your business information. Just type what you’re ordered to by Google and correctly.

Just follow the clear-cut guidelines to make the process as simple as possible. Then claim your listing and verify your Google My Business account. If done, then it will ensure that your business information appears correctly when potential customers search for you in Google.
